Separation Technologies Limited is a group of process and engineering specialists involved in process development and scale up of bespoke processes for the Food, Chemical & Pharmaceutical industries in the field of resin technology. This includes techniques such as Ion Exchange, Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Gel Filtration, Gel Permeation, Size Exclusion, Catalytic Processes, etc.

In 1974, Alan Scott, an engineer from Rohm & Haas, a major resin manufacturer, formed Separation Technologies (then called Prodesman Limited), to address the engineering needs of ion-exchange plants for special processes. Rohm and Haas retained the company as engineering consultants. Arising from the death of one of the principals of the business in August 1994, the company was renamed Separation Technologies Limited and continued to be retained as consultants by Rohm & Haas until August 1996.

With the newly gained independence in 1996, instead of focusing on scale up of existing processes, opportunities now arose to develop new processes and improve existing ones. Subsequently, the freedom to select resins from the various manufacturers in the market place meant the amalgamation of three key aspects of ion-exchange applications:

  • The chemistry
  • The correct resin
  • The engineering

This has allowed the end customer to reduce their operating costs both in terms of chemical usage and effluent discharge and improve product quality and throughput, illustrated by the “Whey demineralisation case study”
